Job summary

City of Norfolk seeks an innovative professional to supervise and instruct the Team Norfolk amateur boxing program at the Norfolk Boxing Center. The role involves designing boxing fitness classes for facility members and coordinating activities in a state-of-the-art 13,000 sq ft facility with two regulation rings at Harbor Park.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree, three years in boxing coaching, supervisory experience, and proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Description

The Department of Recreation, Parks, & Open Space is seeking an innovative professional to supervise and instruct the Team Norfolk amateur boxing program participants in the Norfolk Boxing Center. The selected candidate for this position will also be responsible for designing and instructing boxing fitness classes for facility members. The Norfolk Boxing Center at Harbor Park is a 13,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility that boasts two U.S.A. Boxing regulation-sized competition rings, stadium-style seating, and the capacity to host larger shows and championship bouts.

Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $59,745.51-64,000.88
Essential Functions
  • Supervises and coordinates the training and instruction of participants in basic boxing techniques and physical training regimens.
  • Organizes and coordinates boxing team practices and physical workouts.
  • Monitors boxing activities during training and practices; evaluates performance of program participants and instruct proper techniques to assist with skill development.
  • Monitors guest and participant behavior; enforces rules, regulations and safety precautions at the boxing facility.
  • Administers First Aid to the injured and call Emergency Medical Services (EMS) on serious accident cases.
  • Supervises and instructs the Team Norfolk Amateur boxing program.
  • Manages a center or cluster of centers by conducting site visits, providing for control, safety and security of the facility, providing recommendations for improvement, monitoring the budget, evaluating programs, delivering supplies, interpreting policies, training and scheduling employees, and conducting performance evaluations.
  • Interacts with citizens by greeting customers, handling inquiries, addressing concerns, and providing information.
  • Performs administrative activities by compiling and reviewing reports and schedules, submitting paperwork, collecting monies, and monitoring the budget.
  • Plans, implements and promotes events by collecting information, attending workshops to gain new skills and knowledge, consulting with staff for suggestions, and preparing flyers and announcements for upcoming activities.
  • Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates daily programs and special events.
  • Performs related duties by planning City-wide events, building floats, organizing logistics for City ground breaking, ribbon cuttings, oath of office, memorials, dedications, and recognition ceremonies, including setting up stages, tents, audio equipment, tables, and chairs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Three years experience.

The preferred candidate will possess
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Five (5) years of experience in coaching professional or amateur boxing.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to see, hear, stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone communications.
Additional Information & Requirements
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • CPR/First Aid.
The Preferred Candidate Will Possess
  • A USA Boxing certification.
Work Location

Norfolk Boxing and Fitness Center, 150 Park Ave Norfolk, Virginia 23510

Work Hours

40 hours per week, hours vary and are scheduled between 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Additional evening and weekend hours as required.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.
  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
