Job summary

City of Norfolk seeks an events coordinator at Nauticus and Half Moone Celebration Center to manage special events, coordinate client needs, and supervise staff. The role requires strong service orientation, PR knowledge, and the ability to work under pressure in a busy venue in Norfolk, VA.

Regular full-time employment with extensive benefits is offered; candidates should have relevant education and at least one year in service or administration. Training and event support provided.

Work Hours

Daytime, weekend, evenings, and holidays. Work schedule fluctuates depending upon need during various special event.

Essential Functions
  • Executes special events including coordination, scheduling and managing special event functions
  • Gathers information, coordinates client requests, schedules staff, collects payments, supervises the event and assists the sales manager
  • Services clients by responding to questions, problem solving, obtaining details and coordinating caterer
  • Composes correspondence, gathers data and prepares reports
  • Provides information regarding facilities, programs, special events and temporary exhibition schedule
  • Resolves visitors’ problems requiring immediate attention and handles stressful situations in a calm and pleasant manner
  • Ability to work with diverse audiences
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and communicate effectively and enthusiastically with guests and team members.
  • Maintains thorough knowledge of all Nauticus facilities, exhibits, programming and policies.
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time, lift from ground to above shoulder, climb, bend, stoop, sit, push, pull, perform tasks requiring manual dexterity and utilize telephone and radio communications.
Education / Experience

Requires an associate’s degree or above with course work in business administration, public relations, communications, or a related field and one year of experience in customer service, administration, or a related field. Also, requires some knowledge of effective public relations techniques.

The preferred candidate will possess experience with special events and sales.

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
