Job summary

Field AI in Irvine, CA is seeking a Reality Capture & Sensor Payload Engineer to own the sensor modules on our robotic platform. You will integrate LiDAR, cameras, GNSS, and other sensors, perform calibration, time synchronization, and validation, and work with product teams to match sensor capabilities to customer needs.

This role emphasizes cross‑disciplinary collaboration across Mechanical, Electrical, and Autonomy teams, leading sensor performance improvements and contributing to hardware

Qualifications

• B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
• 9+ years of experience for a senior to staff-level role.
• Cross-domain engineering across mechanical, electrical, and sensor hardware.
• Data and signal processing fluency with point cloud knowledge.
• Leadership and mentoring experience.

Responsibilities

• Sensor Selection & Evaluation: Evaluate sensors based on accuracy, range, and density.
• Insights & Customer Alignment: Engage with customers to reconcile data requirements with constraints.
• Custom Systems: Propose custom sensor solutions when needed.
• Calibration & Time Sync: Own multi-sensor calibration and timing.
• Mechanical & Electrical Integration: Design integration unit for sensor mounting.
• Ruggedization: Design mounting and enclosures for harsh field conditions.
• Data Pipelines: Build data pipelines to registered point clouds.
• Testing & Validation: Test performance under real-world conditions.
• Production Quality: Support quality checks for ruggedized modules.
