Job summary

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University seeks a senior real-time embedded engineer to develop safety-critical embedded software across bare-metal, RTOS, FPGA, and embedded Linux environments. You will collaborate with software and hardware teams, work on analysis tools, and contribute to DoW lifecycle practices.

Applicants should have a strong background in C/C++, hardware interfaces, and RTOS exposure, with willingness to travel and work on-site at SEI or customer

Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering with 10 years of experience; or MS with 8 years; or PhD with 5 years.
  • Experience in collaborative software/hardware teams.
  • Proficiency in C/C++, VHDL/Verilog, Python, C#.
  • Experience with bare-metal systems and CMSIS/HAL drivers.
  • Knowledge of Java, Go, Rust, Ada, MATLAB is a plus.
  • Experience with FPGAs and heterogeneous computing boards.
  • Exposure to RTOSes (VxWorks/Integrity) and embedded software.
  • Familiarity with common embedded interfaces (I2C, CAN, SPI, RS-232/422).
  • Strong communication skills and ability to convey technical challenges to stakeholders.
  • Willingness to work 100% onsite and travel ~25%.

Responsibilities

  • Understand complex embedded systems across multiple abstractions.
  • Design and develop embedded software tools to analyze, test, and evaluate existing software.
  • Apply systems engineering to identify weaknesses in embedded functionality traced from requirements.
  • Use static/dynamic analysis to uncover weaknesses and vulnerabilities, guiding a robust system.
  • Conduct research and knowledge-sharing to improve software development processes and SoS understanding.
