Job summary

IonQ is seeking a Senior Staff Quantum Scientist to join our Science team. You will lead experimental efforts, drive architecture for future quantum systems, and push ultra-low error rates on trapped-ion platforms.

The role combines hands-on hardware with algorithmic control, mentoring junior scientists, and representing IonQ at conferences. A PhD in physics or related field with 7+ years post-PhD experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• PhD in physics or a closely related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least seven years of post-PhD experience in academia or industry.
• Proven experience in quantum control, calibration, benchmarking, and coherent control of qubits.
• Strong background in control software, hardware integration, and data analysis.

Responsibilities

• Lead experimental science activities and prototype coherent control schemes for trapped-ion qubits.
• Drive system-level benchmarking and optimisation to achieve world-leading performance and stability.
• Validate and integrate new trap technologies to scale toward fault-tolerant architectures.
• Guide junior scientists in experimental design, analysis, and presentation of results.
• Represent IonQ at conferences and external collaborations.
