Job summary

Asplundh Electrical Testing is seeking a Senior Relay Technician to lead protective relay testing, calibration, and commissioning for medium- and high-voltage substations. You will guide field crews, coordinate with project managers and utility customers, and ensure safety-forward execution.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years in protective relaying, experience with 5kV–500kV systems, and knowledge of microprocessor relays. This role involves regional travel and a company vehicle for assignments.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on experience in protective relaying for utility substations.
• Demonstrated experience testing medium-to high-voltage protection systems (5kV-500kV).
• Strong working knowledge of microprocessor-based relays and modern relay test platforms.
• Solid understanding of utility safety rules, energized work practices, and lockout/tagout procedures.
• Ability to interpret protection diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and wiring/logic drawings.

Responsibilities

• Lead job briefings and safety tailboards in the field.
• Perform protective relay testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and commissioning on MV/HV systems.
• Test and validate transmission and distribution protection schemes (distance, differential, OC, BKR fail, bus protection).
• Verify control/protection circuits for transformers, circuit breakers, feeders.
• Support outage planning, energization, and restoration activities.
• Create and maintain accurate test reports and field documentation.
• Mentor onsite technicians and coordinate with PMs and customers.
• Lead and participate in project estimating and customer discussions.
