The Client is the investment management and acquisition vehicle for a family office based in New York City with diversified holdings of real estate assets and operating businesses across the United States.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) and Managing Principal and will be mentored to become the strategic financial leader of the business and eventually responsible for all financial activities of the firm.

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

The individual will be responsible for all aspects of accounting pertaining to a specific portfolio of real estate properties. This individual will be responsible for financial statement preparation, processing and coding invoices; rent billing; and monthly closing procedures inclusive of calculating and posting journal entries. The individual will work closely with various 3rd party management companies and review all financial reporting packages.

  • Reconciles general ledger accounts, creates journal entries, and performs month-end close duties.
  • Reviews and analyzes general ledger accounts and profit and loss statement to prepare required accruals or reclassifications.
  • Reconciles general ledger information to the accounts receivable and accounts payable processes by reconciling accounts to client and vendor billings.
  • Analyze all balance sheet and income statement accounts and prepare appropriate journal entries.
  • Prepare monthly accounting activities, such as: bank reconciliations, deposit summaries, and cash position updates
  • Ensure that all tenant and property information is properly set up
  • Assist in budget preparation and required supporting documents
  • Prepare CAM, Real Estate Tax, Insurance, etc. annual adjustments and estimated billings.
  • Review tenant charges to ensure that all are billed without errors
  • Post tenant payments received via mail, ACH or online into accounting system.
  • Process payments to vendors.
  • Communicate with Property Managers concerning property related issues
  • Works regularly with transactional detail to resolve discrepancies and make corrections.
  • Preparation of all vendor 1099 payments at year-end.
  • Maintains established system of internal controls and suggests improvements to processes.
  • Review and analyze lease language, to ensure proper billing.

KEY ATTRIBUTES/EXPERIENCE

  • 5 to 9 years of relevant experience in commercial property management accounting
  • MRI/Yardi and Quickbooks experience is preferred; solid computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate directly with accounting teams, external auditors and senior management.
  • Driven to manage and complete multiple deadline-driven tasks.
  • Self-starter who can work independently.
  • Highly intelligent, analytical and creative; capable of “thinking outside of the box.”
  • Organized with a strong attention to detail.
  • Experience working in an entrepreneurial, closely-held commercial real estate owner is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. MBA or post-graduate degree is preferred.
  • CPA preferred.
