Job summary

Design & Construction Services (DCS) is a group of dedicated architects, engineers, project managers, inspectors, contract administrators, and support staff and is responsible for implementing campus planning parameters for the UCI campus encompassing all aspects of project delivery from program planning to final completion. As part of our role in managing construction projects, the DCS staff develop financial strategies, oversee architectural design, review plans, specifications, manage environmental reviews, prepare and negotiate construction contracts, coordinate staging plans, and manage construction. DCS manages these responsibilities for a university building program that is among the largest in the nation.

Your Role on the Team

Functioning as a team lead, with a high degree of knowledge in Design and Construction. Ensures that University design and construction policy effectively supports and advances the goals of its capital program, in conformance with all applicable state and federal codes and regulations. Develops policies, procedures, (contract) documents and code implementation related to design and construction (including building code and safety regulations) and the related accountability framework to evaluate effectiveness. Counsels senior leaders, providing highly technical advice related to design and construction. Exercises experienced judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results, and may provide guidance to other functional managers, project leaders, and / or analysts.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • In-depth knowledge of planning, design and construction procedures, industry practices, and / or deep expertise in a highly specialized and critical discipline.
  • Advanced experience developing policies related to design and construction.
  • In-depth understanding of contract documents related to the design and construction industry.
  • Advanced knowledge of University organization, including its infrastructure, rules, regulations, policies and short and long range strategic building plans.
  • Advanced analytical, organizational and problem recognition / avoidance / resolution skills.
  • Highly effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including effective negotiation skills and well developed political acumen.
  • Advanced team building and facilitation skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • License to practice in at least one of the following professions: architecture, engineering, urban design, city planning or landscape architecture.
