JOBSUMMARY

The Senior Program Specialist supports the implementation of a variety of activities and programs designed for adults ages 50 and over. These programs may take place during daytime, weekends, evening, or seasonal sessions throughout the year.

This role assists in organizing and facilitating engaging, age-appropriate activities that promote wellness, lifelong learning, social connection, and enrichment. The position helps ensure the safety, comfort, and well‑being of participants while fostering a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment that supports active aging and community involvement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assists in planning, preparing, and implementing educational, recreational, health, and enrichment programs specifically designed for adults ages 50 and over, including fitness and wellness classes, lifelong learning workshops, social engagement activities, cultural events, and community outings.
  • Engages participants in a professional and welcoming manner that encourages independence, dignity, meaningful social interaction, and a strong sense of community connection.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, empathy, and respect in all interactions, fostering an environment that values the life experience, perspectives, and contributions of older adults.
  • Supports participant safety and comfort during programs and activities, ensuring adherence to established policies, accessibility considerations, and best practices for active aging.
  • Provides individualized assistance during classes and activities—such as technology support, health and wellness instruction, or skill‑building workshops—based on participant interests and abilities.
  • Collaborates with staff and volunteers to identify participant interests, gather feedback, and contribute to the ongoing development of responsive, engaging programming for older adults.
  • Assists with the setup, organization, and maintenance of program spaces, ensuring equipment, materials, and accommodations meet the needs of adult participants.
  • Completes assigned administrative tasks, including attendance tracking, data entry, and communication with participants, family members, and community partners, as appropriate.
  • Performs other related duties asrequired.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; previous experience working with adults, particularly older adults—in a recreational, educational, wellness, or community‑based setting is preferred.
  • Some college coursework in gerontology, recreation management, social services, education, human services, or a related field is desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of positive engagement, conflict resolution, and de‑escalation techniques appropriate for adult participants.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles and the ability to develop engaging, accessible programs tailored to adults ages 50 and over.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general internet applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Effective problem‑solving skills to assess situations and implement practical, participant‑centered solutions.
  • Ability to build and maintain professional, respectful relationships while working collaboratively in a team‑oriented environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work requires regular physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and other movements necessary to actively support, supervise, and participate in games, and activities conducted both indoors and outdoors.
