Location: Washington, D.C.

Department: Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI)

Reports to: Director of China Climate Hub

Schedule: 40 hours/week

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $58,500-70,000

SUMMARY

The Asia Society Policy Institute, a solutions-oriented think and do tank headquartered in New York with an office in Washington, D.C., seeks a Senior Program Officer – China Climate Industrial Policy to play a central role in its work at the intersection of industrial policy, trade, and climate change. The position will contribute to ASPI’s efforts to analyze industrial strategies shaping the global clean technology transition, with a particular focus on China’s policies and their implications for the United States, Europe, and other major emerging economies. The officer will work closely with other members of the team to generate insights that inform policymakers and stakeholders navigating these complex dynamics.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the design and implementation of a strategy and work plan. This requires considering how to bring cutting-edge insights about China to policymakers, practitioners, corporates, funders, and the climate community elsewhere.
  • Conduct in-depth research on China’s industrial policies in key clean technologysectors and assess their impact on global trade, climate goals, and industrial competitiveness.
  • Draft and contribute to reports, issue briefs, and op-eds analyzing industrial policy trends, trade measures, and geopolitical implications.
  • Together with the Director, manage the work of the industrial policy pillar on a day-to-day basis, including ensuring the timely and quality execution of research projects and engagement plans.
  • Develop and present policy recommendations, ensuring that industrial and trade policy supports climate objectives, and help coordinate their public and private dissemination.
  • Identify opportunities for private and public events on relevant and timely topics, including being a regular speaker or host of these events.
  • Organize high-level dialogues, informal roundtables, and forums with policymakers, industry leaders, and civil society representatives, including all organizational and logistical aspects.
  • Maintain relationships with key stakeholders in governments, industries, consultancies, and civil society.
  • Support fundraising efforts, including proposal writing and donor engagement.

Engage in other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Advanced degree in public policy, economics, international relations, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in industrial policy, trade policy, climate policy, or a related area.
  • Strong understanding of China’s industrial policies, particularly in clean technology sectors.
  • Familiarity with U.S. and EU policies related to industrial strategy, trade, and climate action.
  • Proven ability to conduct high-quality policy research and translate complex issues into clear, actionable insights.
  • Experience publishing in policy journals, media outlets, or think tank reports.
  • Strong networks in the industrial policy, trade, and climate policy communities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers.
  • Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in Mandarin is a plus.
  • Experience working on or in China is preferred.
