Role Description
The Senior Production Manager is a full-time, on-site role based in San Antonio, TX, responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordinating production activities to ensure customer orders are completed efficiently, on time, and according to quality standards. This position works closely with the Shop Foreman, CAD design team, Fabrication, Purchasing, Sales, and Warehouse personnel to ensure materials, labor, equipment, and production capacity are aligned with customer requirements.
The ideal candidate has experience in welding, metal fabrication, and manufacturing shop environments and understands the challenges of scheduling custom or engineered-to-order work. The Senior Production Managerwill use Lean Manufacturing principlesto improve workflow, reduce waste and downtime, optimize production flow, and continuously improve scheduling and operational processes.
What You'll Do:
- Develop and maintain daily, weekly, and long-range production schedules based on customer requirements, production capacity, material availability, labor resources, and established priorities
- Coordinate production schedules across welding, fabrication, cutting, forming, finishing, and assembly operations to ensure jobs move efficiently through the manufacturing process
- Review incoming orders, drawings, bills of materials, and production requirements to determine appropriate scheduling, resource, and production needs
- Monitor production progress and adjust schedules as necessary to address delays, material shortages, equipment issues, labor constraints, or changing customer priorities
- Coordinate closely with Purchasing, Warehouse, supervisors, and productions leads to ensure materials, components, and consumables are available, and jobs are released to the production floor in the proper sequence
- Monitor production capacity and workload to identify bottlenecks, balance resources, minimize work in process, and improve overall production flow
- Track job status and provide regular updates regarding production schedules, anticipated completion dates, and potential delays to management
- Maintain organized and accurate production schedules and planning information
- Monitor production performance and develop production metrics related to on-time delivery, schedule attainment, throughput, labor utilization, lead time, WIP, and productivity
- Lead Lean Manufacturing and continuous-improvement initiatives focused on improving workflow, reducing waste and downtime, eliminating bottlenecks, and improving safety, quality, delivery, cost, and productivity
Qualifications:
Required
- 5+ years of experience in production planning, production scheduling, manufacturing, oroperations, preferably in a metal fabrication, welding, or job-shop environment
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and production workflow
- Demonstrated experience applying Lean Manufacturing principles in a production environment
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems and production scheduling software
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to read and understand production drawings, bills of materials, work orders, and manufacturing documentation
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and changing schedules
- Strong communication skills and the ability work effectively with production employees, supervisors, managers, Purchasing, Engineering/CAD, and other departments
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate production information
Experience That Will Set You Apart
- Welding and stainless-steel fabrication experience
- Experience in a custom fabrication or job-shop environment
- Lean Six Sigma certification or formal Lean Manufacturing training
- APICS/ASCM certification or related production planning coursework
- Experience with capacity planning and labor forecasting
- Experience developing production KPIs and dashboards
- Familiarity with welding, cutting, forming, machining, finishing, and assembly processes
