Job summary

Jobtailor in Illinois seeks a seasoned Product Counsel to guide product teams through the lifecycle, from design to launch and ongoing operation.

You will embed privacy, data governance, security, and responsible AI considerations, review data flows and uses of data, and serve as the primary adviser on privacy, data licensing, and technology contracts for U.S. and international initiatives. Collaborate with procurement, engineering, and security to balance business goals with legal risk.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
• 5+ years of relevant legal experience advising on technology, privacy, data, and commercial matters.
• Experience as a product counsel with expertise across product, privacy, AI and emerging technology related legal issues.
• Superior business acumen with the ability to balance legal issues with business objectives.
• Excellent attention to detail, judgment, flexibility, and dependability.
• Effective communication with outside counsel, senior management, and business colleagues.
• High standards of integrity and good judgment.
• Commitment to producing high quality work.
• Ability to show ownership of work, take on challenges, acknowledge growth opportunities, and demonstrate patience when learning new processes.
• CIPM, CIPP/US, and/or CIPP/EU certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Serve as product counsel to Product and Engineering teams throughout the product lifecycle
• Advise on legal and regulatory considerations from product design and development through launch, commercialization, and ongoing operation
• Embed privacy, data governance, security, and responsible AI considerations into products, features, platforms, and business initiatives
• Review product functionality, data flows, user experiences, and proposed uses of data and AI to identify legal risks and develop practical solutions
• Serve as subject matter expert and primary legal advisor on U.S. and international privacy, data governance, technology and data licensing, and AI implementation
• Build operational and compliance requirements for internal and external data usage
• Manage external privacy providers and software vendors and lead process enhancements
• Collaborate with the technology and cybersecurity team, including the Chief Information Security Officer, on privacy and data governance risks
• Lead negotiations for complex technology contracts and agreements, including SaaS, data and software licensing, and confidentiality agreements
• Collaborate with Procurement to improve contract lifecycle management processes
• Balance business and contract goals against legal, business, policy, and reputational risks
• Present and defend positions to business team members and counterparties
• Perform other duties as assigned
