Job summary

Bentley Systems is seeking a Senior Principal Engineer to own end-to-end architecture for the Bentley Developer Platform in a hybrid Philadelphia setting. You will drive API standards, security models, and integration patterns while contributing code and mentoring engineers.

You will collaborate with Product and Technology to deliver a cloud-native platform that supports REST and MCP/AI surfaces, ensuring scalable, data-driven decisions across the API portfolio.

Qualifications

• 12+ years of software engineering experience and large-scale systems architecture.
• Own end-to-end developer platform architecture including front-end UX to API registry.
• Experience with enterprise API management platforms (MuleSoft, Apigee, Kong, Workato) and developer portals (Backstage).
• Ability to define global API standards for monitoring, authentication, metering, and registration.
• Strong expertise in OAuth 2.0 / OIDC and platform security models.
• Hands-on experience in distributed systems, event streaming, API gateways, and ERP/settlement integrations.
• Blend of coding skills with the ability to influence multiple product engineering teams.
• Familiarity with AI/agent integration patterns and MCP a plus.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the architecture of the developer platform, including API gateway, authentication, metering, and billing.
• Own end-to-end platform architecture from developer experience to registry and analytics.
• Set API standards with Product for monitoring, authentication, metering, and registration.
• Write production code and review PRs while unblocking engineers on the critical path.
• Serve as senior technical authority between Developer Platform, Product, and engineering teams.
• Publish API Design Standards in collaboration with product teams.
• Define platform governance: telemetry schema, hub listing, security and integration patterns.
• Establish IMS OAuth as the standard authentication model.
• Document migration paths for APIs to platform standards.
• Ensure AI and MCP surfaces are first-class within architecture and taxonomy.
• Partner with Engineering Manager on hiring and team structure.
• Coordinate with CIO on enterprise apps and ERP integration.
