Job summary

Medtronic plc in Mounds View, MN seeks a Senior Principal Software Engineer to lead the architecture and development of embedded software for next-generation medical devices. You will balance hands-on engineering with architectural leadership, partnering with HW, systems, and regulatory teams to deliver compliant, high-performance software.

The role emphasizes design standards, security, and scalability while guiding critical decisions that impact platform strategy and product value.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, engineering, or a related technical discipline and minimum of 10 years of work experience OR advanced degree with 8 years of work experience.
Nice to Have Knowledge of microservices architecture and event-driven systems.
Familiarity with FPGA.
Experience in regulated or enterprise-scale environments.
Knowledge of cloud and connected medical devices.
Excellent collaboration skills across engineering, quality, and regulatory teams.
Pragmatic decision-making that balances compliance, security, and delivery velocity.
Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Architect, design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality medical device embedded software solutions as part of the software team in accordance with Agile principles and Scrum methodologies.
Define and uphold architectural standards, design patterns, and best practices.
Make high-impact technical decisions that align with long-term platform and business strategy.
Review and guide system designs, APIs, data models, and integration approaches.
Optimize system performance, reliability, and scalability.
Ensure solutions meet security, privacy, and compliance requirements.
Lead Risk Assessment activities and Requirements development.
Cross-functional team collaboration with HW and Systems partners, including integration team, testing team, Quality, System V&V, etc.
Drive continuous improvement through retrospectives and lessons learned.
Provide leadership in solving engineering problems and fostering creativity and innovation in design and problem solutions.
Follow Medical device regulations (IEC 62304, IEC 82304, FDA, etc.).
Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in software development, and make recommendations for process improvements.
