UnitedHealth Group is seeking a Senior Principal AI/ML Engineer for the GTS organization. Lead architectural vision, design, and delivery of scalable AI/ML solutions across healthcare workflows, combining deep software engineering with applied AI/ML to build cloud-native services and APIs.

You will mentor engineers, drive production-grade systems, and collaborate with product, data, security, and business leaders while maintaining a focus on responsible AI. Remote work within the U.S.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 15+ years of relevant engineering experience, including 10+ years hands-on software engineering and 6+ years delivering production AI/ML solutions.
• Hands-on depth in cloud-native architecture, automated testing, CI/CD, IaC, observability, secure design, performance tuning, and production incident resolution.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate ML/LLM solutions, including generative AI, RAG, and agents, with deployment, versioning, monitoring, and responsible AI controls.
• Proven delivery of complex, production-grade distributed services, APIs, data integrations, and reusable platforms, with strong coding skills in Python and at least one additional general-purpose language.
• Cross-team technical leadership on ambiguous initiatives: influencing architecture and roadmaps, resolving dependencies and risks, mentoring engineers, and explaining trade-offs clearly.

Responsibilities

• Define architecture for complex initiatives spanning multiple teams and deliver measurable quality goals.
• Design and build distributed, cloud-native services, APIs, and reusable libraries; establish integration contracts.
• Create prototypes, evaluate design options, and lead technical/code reviews with quality testing focus.
• Build reliable data integrations and event-driven workflows with data quality controls.
• Advance CI/CD, IaC, automated security and quality checks with controlled releases and rollback paths.
• Own production readiness: service-level objectives, observability, alerts, and runbooks; diagnose incidents and implement improvements.
• Optimize performance, scalability, resilience and cloud cost; apply secure design and least-privilege access.
• Influence roadmaps and standards across GTS; mentor engineers without direct management.
• Develop ML/LLM solutions including generative AI, RAG, and vector retrieval; select approaches by workflow needs.
