Job summary

University of Michigan seeks a Supervisor for the Scientific Instrument Shop within the Physics Department. The role oversees a high-precision machine shop, mentors instrument makers and machinists, and acts as primary technical advisor for faculty, researchers, and students.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent/ Master Toolmaker apprenticeship required.
• 7+ years in precision machining or similar, with 3+ years in supervision.
• Ability to translate designs into manufacturable specs (DFM).
• Proficiency with CAD/CAM and safety/compliance knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Oversee technical staff and shop operations with a focus on precision quality and safety.
• Manage costs, budgeting, and billing for internal/external accounts.
• Direct student shop instruction and supervise users to ensure safe operation of machines.
