Job summary

The University of Michigan's Physics Department seeks a Scientific Instrument Shop Supervisor to lead the advanced machine shop that supports cutting‑edge research. You will advise faculty and researchers on design, material selection, and manufacturability while managing a team of instrument makers and machinists.

You will oversee budgets, purchasing, safety programs, and preventative maintenance, ensuring accurate job costing and timely project delivery.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of progressive experience in precision machining, instrumentation, or job shop manufacturing.

Responsibilities

• Consult on experimental designs and provide manufacturability feedback for complex assemblies.
• Oversee shop finances, purchasing, invoicing, and budgeting for internal recharge accounts.
• Supervise instrument makers and machinists; plan workflows and mentor staff.
• Maintain safety programs, SDS, PPE, and compliance with ITAR, EHS, and device regulations.
• Plan and execute custom machining, prototyping, and precision subassemblies.
• Provide student shop instruction and safety training to graduate and undergraduate users.
