Job summary

Cornell University’s Clark Hall Machine Shop in Ithaca, NY seeks a Machine Shop Supervisor to lead a team of machinists, mentor apprentices, and manage shop workflow and safety compliance. You will translate research needs into manufacturable parts and CAD models, estimate fabrication costs, and guide students and faculty in producing precision components.

The role requires a mechanical technology background, 3–5 years in machine tools, and strong Autodesk CAD/CAM skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical technology or related field or equivalent combination of training and on-the-job experience.
• 3–5 years on-the-job experience in a machine tool trade.
• Experience supervising others, especially technical staff.
• Knowledge of a wide variety of machining equipment including manual and CNC milling and lathes; CNC programming.
• Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD/CAM software (Autodesk products).
• Ability to apply machining/fabrication techniques.
• Understanding of metals/materials & their characteristics.
• Strong customer service focus with good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Demonstrated skill in understanding cultural differences.

Responsibilities

• Manage a team of skilled research machinists.
• Mentor apprentice machinists and provide training and guidance.
• Coordinate shop workflow, priorities, and resources.
• Ensure safety standards and university policies are followed.
• Evaluate projects, set timelines, and select materials/manufacturing processes.
• Oversee student instructional shop and supervise training staff.
• Collaborate with researchers to design complex components and parts.
• Oversee maintenance, repair, and procurement of shop equipment and materials.
• Keep staff updated on required safety training and certifications.
