Job summary

Oportun is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and operate scalable platform services and shared libraries that improve developer productivity and system reliability.

In this role you will contribute to architecture decisions, raise engineering quality, and mentor peers while advancing Continuous Delivery and security practices across backend systems in a fintech environment.

Qualifications

• 7-8 years of related software engineering experience with a bachelor's degree, or a master's degree with an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong backend development experience.
• Proficiency in Java, C#, C++, or similar backend languages with strong design principles.
• 3+ years designing, building, deploying, and maintaining container-based applications.
• 4+ years of experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience with Continuous Delivery and automated deployment pipelines.
• Mentoring and leading engineers; contributing to team-level technical leadership.
• Secure development practices and security considerations in distributed systems.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain scalable platform services and libraries.
• Contribute to platform and system architecture decisions focused on reliability and developer experience.
• Write high-quality, maintainable code and promote engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with Staff Engineers to implement standards and patterns for Continuous Delivery.
• Identify and address performance, scalability, and reliability issues across platform services.
• Participate in design reviews, code reviews, and technical discussions with constructive feedback.
• Drive operational excellence by improving monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices.
• Investigate root causes of production issues and implement long-term fixes to reduce on-call burden.
• Mentor junior engineers through code reviews and pairing.
