Job summary

City and County of San Francisco seeks a Platform Engineer in the Department of Technology to drive cloud migration and modernization under Cloud 2030, migrating ~1,700 workloads to cloud platforms.

You will write Terraform, build CI/CD pipelines, and manage multi-cloud deployments, guiding architecture, data migrations, and production cutover while ensuring security and CJIS/HIPAA controls.

Qualifications

• Education: An associate degree in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or closely related field or equivalent with substantial coursework.
• Experience: Three (3) years of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, enhancing, and/or maintaining components of an enterprise network.
• Substitution: Additional experience may substitute for the required degree (year-for-year basis).
• Completion of specific trainee program may substitute for the required degree.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement multi-cloud infrastructure using Terraform/OpenTofu.
• Build and maintain GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines for infra and app deployments.
• Lead end-to-end cloud migrations including network design, compute provisioning, database migration, and production cutover.
• Modernize legacy apps for cloud deployment (containerization, CI/CD enablement).
• Develop custom applications and internal platform services.
• Migrate databases (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL) with data transfer and HA configurations.
• Implement compliance controls (CJIS, HIPAA) as infrastructure-as-code.
• Mentor junior engineers on cloud architecture and modern dev practices.
