Job summary

Sprezzatura, remote in the United States, seeks a Senior Platform Developer to design, develop, and maintain APIs and services powering the VA.gov platform. You will build secure, scalable back-end systems enabling VA.gov engineering teams to deliver digital services to millions of Veterans.

This role emphasizes reusable services, enterprise integration, platform architecture, security, reliability, and operational excellence. Strong Rails experience and REST API skills are required.

Qualifications

• Public Trust clearance ability required.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• 10 years backend or full-stack engineering experience.
• Strong Ruby/Rails experience.
• RESTful API design experience.
• Experience with PostgreSQL or relational databases.
• Experience integrating with external APIs and services.
• Familiarity with background job processing (Sidekiq).
• Git and GitHub workflows experience.
• Automated testing with RSpec.
• Understanding distributed systems and SOA.
• Experience in Agile software development.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services with Ruby/Rails.
• Build secure, scalable REST APIs for Platform and product teams.
• Develop reusable services and shared backend capabilities.
• Write clean, well-tested code and participate in code reviews.
• Improve backend architecture, scalability, and performance.
• Integrate with internal and external enterprise systems.
• Support CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
• Ensure secure authentication/authorization patterns.
• Maintain API contracts and documentation.
• Monitor service reliability and respond to incidents.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment.
