Job summary

Maricopa County’s Planning and Development Department seeks a Plans Examiner Senior to review commercial and residential construction plans for code compliance. This role requires interpreting plans, coordinating with reviewers, and ensuring accurate permit decisions.

The candidate will serve as a subject matter expert on multiple codes and guide staff to maintain consistency. A valid ICC certification and a strong background in building codes are preferred.

Qualifications

• Five years of experience in plan checking of architectural, residential, or commercial building plan review.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Post-secondary education in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field may substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex building code reviews of commercial applications to ensure compliance.
• Review more complex residential applications for compliance.
• Prepare written plan review comments and update permitting database.
• Serve as subject matter expert on International Residential, Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fuel Gas, and National Electrical codes.
• Guide Plans Examiner staff to ensure uniform procedures and regulations.
• Explain development requirements to the public, architects, and engineers.
