Job summary

Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) is seeking a Principal Engineer – Planning R&D in Carmel, IN or Eagan, MN to evaluate technologies shaping the electric grid. You will combine deep power systems knowledge with industry context to assess impacts on MISO processes and systems and develop forward-looking solutions.

This role collaborates across disciplines, integrating stability metrics, monitoring, and planning changes to prepare the grid for the future and ensure reliability.

Qualifications

• Master's degree required in electrical/energy engineering or closely related field.
• At least 10 years of relevant experience in electric energy industry.
• Experience with power system modeling and analysis, particularly power flow, and dynamic stability studies.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop novel analytical methods complementing phasor-domain tools.
• Create test benches and prototype workflows (PSCAD, ETRAN+) for R&D evaluation.
• Establish planning timeframe processes for long-range stability considerations.
• Define monitoring and validation processes linking planning to operations.
• Drive process changes clarifying roles between MISO and Transmission Owners for stability responsibilities.
• Translate R&D insights into updated planning standards and guidance documents.
