Job summary

Prince William County Planning Office is seeking a Senior Planner to lead land use entitlement work, assess rezonings and special use permits, and provide staff support to the Planning Commission and Board of County Supervisors. The role emphasizes independent judgment and project management across complex planning challenges.

The Senior Planner will prepare reports, present findings, and negotiate on behalf of the County, working with a range of stakeholders and attending occasional public

Qualifications

• 6 years of planning-related experience
• Bachelor's degree in planning, urban and regional planning, or a closely related field
• Master's degree and AICP certification preferred
• Knowledge of local and regional planning practices, research techniques, drafting, and engineering designs
• Experience with rezonings and special use permits
• Experience leading teams and working independently
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to present data clearly
• Experience communicating with policymakers, senior managers, interdepartmental staff, and intergovernmental entities
• Self-starter with ability to work independently
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local planning laws
• Knowledge of zoning and development regulations and strong research skills

Responsibilities

• Review and prepare reports for land development applications as part of the land entitlement process
• Research and develop reports evaluating public and private projects across land uses in the County
• Present to varied audiences and explain complex concepts clearly
• Produce Staff Reports and Memoranda
• Meet time-sensitive deadlines
• Represent the agency at public meetings, including outside normal hours
