The Senior Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of the pharmacist as stated by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy and reports to the Pharmacy Operations Supervisor. The technician assists the pharmacist and other healthcare professionals in the medication delivery system. In addition to the Pharmacy Technician I and II roles, the Senior Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing chemotherapeutic agents, managing chemotherapy inventory, and providing staff education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Uses computer systems to access patient records for medication billing and verification of patient location.
- Organizes and prioritizes phone calls and patient interactions, informing the pharmacist accordingly.
- Collects and organizes relevant information under the pharmacist’s guidance.
- Recognizes and prioritizes stat and emergency medication orders.
- Maintains and uses equipment properly, ensuring cleanliness and functionality.
- Performs stock rotation, ordering, and maintains appropriate inventory levels.
- Stores medications correctly in designated areas.
- Prepares oral suspensions, ointments, creams, unit dose syringes, inhalants, and tablets.
- Prepares patient-specific doses accurately, ensuring correct medication, concentration, and dose.
- Labels medications properly and applies auxiliary labels when necessary.
- Prepares medications for automated dispensing devices, ensuring correct placement.
- Delivers patient-specific medications to the correct drawer and removes expired medications appropriately.
- Builds rapport with patient care units, being visible and available to address their needs.
- Prepares sterile preparations using aseptic techniques, including IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, and sterile syringes, following USP 797 standards.
- Compounds stock solutions and manages IV pharmacy workflow technology efficiently, including TPN and bulk fluid orders.
- Ensures proper cleaning and maintenance of IV room laminar flow hoods per regulations.
- Restocks IV supplies and reviews stock for outdated medications.
- Prepares chemotherapy and hazardous medications safely, complying with USP 800 standards under pharmacist supervision.
- Maintains proper cleaning of Hematology/Oncology Clinic Pharmacy laminar flow hoods per USP standards.
- Maintains inventory levels of supplies and chemotherapy medications in the clinic pharmacy.
- Participates in training and mentoring new and existing staff as an approved technician preceptor.
- Identifies performance issues in new employees and provides feedback and training.
- Performs Charge Technician duties as assigned.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certified with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician OR eligible with certification obtained within 9 months of hire.
- Current certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or ExCPT is required.
- Completion of an approved pharmacy technician training program by the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
- Certification in sterile product preparation required or must be obtained within 9 months of hire.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- 3-5 years of hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred.
- At least 2 years of sterile product preparation experience required.
- Experience with chemotherapy preparation preferred.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology and pharmacy processes required.
- Effective interpersonal skills for communication with hospital staff and patients.
- Basic computer skills required.
Working Conditions
Work occurs in or near a clinical environment with minimal hazards, including exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and medicinal preparations, with minimal adverse conditions.
