Job summary

Elastic, the Search AI Company, seeks a Principal Software Engineer to join the Elasticsearch Performance team. You will lead architectural and code-level performance initiatives to optimize and predictability of Elasticsearch performance across environments.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate cross-functionally, and drive AI-assisted optimization work from design through production to ensure scalable, high-performance systems for global customers.

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of Java internals and JVM memory management.
• Experience profiling and optimizing distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of distributed architectures and scaling.
• Experience using AI or tooling to accelerate optimization.

Responsibilities

• Own core performance initiatives from architecture to production.
• Develop performance models for complex distributed systems.
• Drive optimization strategies for reliability and scalability.
• Profile and analyze system behavior to identify bottlenecks.
• Ensure robust benchmarks and regression detection for stateful and serverless architectures.
• Collaborate across teams to embed performance-first thinking.
• Build AI-assisted optimization harnesses to streamline benchmarking.
