Job summary

Elastic seeks a Principal Software Engineer to lead architectural and code-level performance initiatives for Elasticsearch. You will own core optimization projects, design performance models, and drive strategies to keep Elasticsearch fast, scalable, and reliable across varied environments.

You will profile system behavior, mentor engineers, and push AI-assisted tooling to accelerate profiling, hypothesis testing, and benchmarking. Strong collaboration across teams is essential.

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of Java internals and JVM memory management.
• Proven profiling/optimization of distributed systems with flamegraphs, JMH or Rally.
• Understanding of distributed systems architecture and scaling challenges.

Responsibilities

• Own performance initiatives from design to production for high-impact optimizations.
• Develop performance models for complex distributed systems.
• Drive optimization strategies for performance, predictability, and scalability.
