Job summary

Vertex Optics is seeking a Senior Optics Technician to fabricate prototype optical components for demanding industries including aerospace, medical, and defense. The role requires setting up and operating 5-axis CNC or conventional equipment, preparing tooling, and ensuring tight tolerances are met with advanced measurement devices.

You will document results, maintain quality standards, and collaborate with a cross-functional team in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• A.S. or B.S. technical degree helpful.
• 10+ years' experience fabricating optical glass, crystal, and ceramic materials.
• CAD/CAM experience – Mastercam beneficial.
• Strong mathematical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
• Self-starter who can follow procedures with minimal direction.
• Excellent time management and ability to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate prototype optical components to exact specifications for aerospace, medical, defense, semiconductor, and energy sectors.
• Set up and operate conventional or CNC equipment (5-axis) to produce high-quality parts.
• Prepare tooling for grinding, polishing, or measurement.
• Use measurement devices such as CMM and interferometer to verify tolerances.
• Maintain thorough documentation and traceability of work.
• Collaborate with team, communicate safety and quality concerns to supervisor.
• Cross-train and assist teammates as needed.

Senior Optics Technician

Reports to:

Production Manager

Job Summary:

Fabricate prototype optical components of exceptional quality for use in aerospace, medical, defense, semi-conductor, and energy industries.

Expectations:

• Produce high quality, complex optical components to customers' specifications.
• Set up and operate conventional optical manufacturing equipment and/or computer-controlled fabrication machines (5- axis simultaneous CNC equipment).
• Prepares tooling for grinding, polishing or measurement setups.
• Use measurement devices such as CMM, interferometer, micrometers, etc.
• Use knowledge, skills and intellect to solve complex problems.
• Hold close tolerances during the fabrication and integration of complex optical configurations.
• Follow engineering drawings, manufacturing instructions, procedures, process specifications, schematics, sketches, or verbal instructions.
• Develop exceptional processes and procedures for Vertex teammates to follow.
• Inspect work and hold high-quality standards.
• Maintain accurate notes, record data, track job time, and properly fill out documentation.
• Communicate safety, quality, productivity, and personnel issues to supervisor.
• Cross train and assist team members.

Qualifications:

• High technical and mathematical aptitude.
• A.S. or B.S. technical degree helpful.
• CAD/CAM experience – Specifically Mastercam beneficial.
• Intermediate computer skills, strong familiarity with Microsoft Office.
• Minimum of 10 years' experience fabricating various optical glass, crystal, and ceramic materials.
• Machinist experience helpful.
• Complex problem-solving skills, good judgment, and decision-making skills.
• Self-starter, capable of working with little direction and able to follow procedures.
• Strong work ethic, act with integrity, honest, reliable, dependable, and positive attitude.
• Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines and to prioritize tasks.
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced and at times stressful environment.
• Willingness to be flexible when meeting customer deliveries

Work Schedule:

• Full Time (40+ hours per week)
• Core hours: Monday – Friday, 7am – 3:30pm, or Monday – Thursday 12pm – 10:30pm
• Flexibility to work overtime and weekends as needed.
