Job summary

Valar Atomics is hiring a senior I&C engineer focused on neutron detection, signal processing, and radiation monitoring. You will lead design, verification, and integration for safe, high-reliability systems in support of reactor protection and regulatory compliance.

You will collaborate with physics, thermal-hydraulics, electrical engineering, and operations to deliver robust I&C architectures and testing programs in a startup energy environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.
• 8+ years of nuclear I&C, radiation detection, reactor protection, or related areas.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, specification, selection, and integration of neutron detectors and signal conditioning electronics.
• Design and validate radiation monitoring systems (area, process, stack, coolant activity).
• Oversee detector placement, shielding, and response characterization (in-core and ex-core).
• Perform calibration strategies and uncertainty analyses for neutron flux and startup instrumentation.
• Develop and maintain I&C architectures for safety-related and non-safety systems per IEEE 603, IEC 61508, and DOE guidance.
• Produce engineering deliverables: control logic, loop diagrams, datasheets, architecture drawings, narratives, and specifications.
• Lead FAT/SAT testing, calibration procedures, and surveillance for detectors.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards; mentor junior engineers; collaborate across teams.
