Job summary

CENIC is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to design, implement, and evolve CalREN, Pacific Wave, and the Western Regional Network under the guidance of the Principal Engineer. This role applies high-level technical expertise to ensure reliability, performance, and scalability across the organization.

The candidate will lead architecture for IP/MPLS networks, mentor engineers, and drive automation and cross-team collaboration. Hybrid work in California; travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline with 10+ years of experience.
• Mastery of IP routing (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS), MPLS (Segment Routing), VPNs (L2VPN, IPVPN), and traffic engineering.
• Familiarity with Cisco, Juniper, Arista, Nokia gear and platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, lead peer reviews, and drive best-practice adoption.
• Strong communication with collaborators, leadership, and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and evolution of backbone and access networks to support bandwidth and resilience.
• Publish goals and project plans for CENIC networks.
• Set architecture standards and configuration policies.
• Conduct traffic and capacity analysis for long-term decisions.
• Stay current on networking trends and industry developments.
• Occasional travel to conferences to engage with the community.
• Serve as technical authority for backbone and member networks.
• Translate strategy into technical roadmaps and align with goals.
• Represent CENIC in external engagements and initiatives.
• Identify risks and drive cross-department solutions.
• Collaborate with NOC, Security, and Program Management teams.
• Mentor engineers and provide technical reviews and training.
• Identify automation opportunities for provisioning and monitoring.
