Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a Senior Navigation Analyst to advance mathematical physics-based modeling for navigation sensors and to mentor a team of engineers, mathematicians, and physicists in pursuit of high-accuracy navigation solutions for demanding military applications.

Join a collaborative Navigation Group within the Force Projection Sector to model errors, assess system fidelity, and communicate actionable results to decision-makers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or similar technical field.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience developing and using mathematical or physics-based models describing a complex system to perform analysis for military applications.
  • Experience with performance analysis for maritime navigation or missile guidance systems.
  • Experience modeling navigation sensors including IMUs, GPS, or navigational sonars (Doppler Velocity Log, Correlation Velocity Log).
  • Experience with mentoring/knowledge sharing.
  • Experience with Kalman filters and/or modern system estimation and multi-sensor data fusion methods.
  • Experience with a high-level programming language like MATLAB or Python.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting and presenting technical work.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to US Navy facilities and contractor sites.
  • Eligibility to obtain US citizenship and security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Master the mathematical models governing inertial navigation systems used by the US Navy surface and subsurface fleet.
  • Derive physics-based models for how navigation aids interact and influence the inertial system.
  • Assess fidelity of navigation systems and communicate conclusions to decision-makers.
  • Mentor colleagues to grow subject matter expertise in mathematical physics-based modeling for navigation sensors.
