Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, MD, is seeking a Senior Navigation Engineer to join the Navigation group in the Force Projection Sector. You will apply your operational experience to evaluate Fleet navigation system performance and provide recommendations for future enhancements.

You will lead analyses of inertial navigation systems, navigation sensors, and Alt-Nav concepts, author test plans, support field tests onboard ships and submarines, mentor

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field.
  • 5+ years of relevant hands-on U.S. Navy Fleet navigation experience.
  • Hands-on familiarity with navigation sensors and an understanding of navigation system architectures.
  • Track record of project leadership and staff mentorship.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 3-5 weeks per year for sponsor presentations and field tests.
  • Ability to obtain Secret clearance and ultimately Top Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as subject-matter expert on operation and performance of surface and subsurface navigation systems.
  • Independently evaluate accuracy of high-accuracy inertial navigation systems and their supporting aids.
  • Apply analysis techniques to assess the fidelity of navigation systems and PNT data.
  • Lead studies of Alt-Nav sensors and present findings to sponsors.
  • Author test plans and provide test support, including live onboard field tests on ships/submarines.
  • Provide independent technical assessments to inform Navy decisions and road-map Fleet technologies.
  • Mentor and develop staff, expanding knowledge base of navigation analysts.
  • Support development of Fleet training devices and onsite training at Naval facilities and on platforms.
  • Facilitate interactions with Fleet representatives and Sailors to identify trends for sponsors.
