Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD, is seeking a Navigation Analyst to develop deep mathematical and physics-based models for high-precision maritime navigation systems used by the US Navy. You will implement models in software, assess system fidelity, and communicate recommendations to sponsors and decision-makers.

The role requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, 3+ years of model-based analysis experience, and the ability to obtain government

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or similar technical field.
  • At least 3 years of experience developing and using mathematical or physics-based models.
  • Experience with Kalman filters and/or modern system estimation methods.
  • Experience with MATLAB or Python.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills for documenting and presenting work.
  • Willingness to travel to US Navy facilities occasionally.
  • Ability to obtain Secret clearance by start date and potential Top Secret clearance; US citizenship.
  • Master's or PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or similar field.
  • Experience modeling navigation sensors including IMUs, GPS, DVL, CVL.
  • Experience with accuracy performance analysis for maritime navigation or missile systems.
  • Experience with DoD test and evaluation programs.
  • Familiarity with submarine operations.
  • Top Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Master the mathematical models governing inertial navigation systems’ performance.
  • Derive physics-based models of interaction between navigation aids and inertial systems.
  • Implement these models in software to analyze inertial navigation performance.
  • Assess navigation system fidelity and communicate conclusions to decision-makers.
