Job summary

Lab37 Robotics in Pittsburgh is seeking a Senior Motor Controls Engineer to define how robotic mechanisms move and ensure reliable production implementations. You will guide motor and actuation decisions, own the controls implementation, and collaborate to validate performance across disciplines.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team to explore control strategies, tune BLDC/PMSM and stepper control, and drive robust, supportable solutions for direct-to-customer food production robots.

Qualifications

• ownership of motor-control solutions from development through production, including BLDC/PMSM and stepper control.
• Strong applied controls fundamentals: motor physics, commutation/FOC, feedback, discrete-time control, loop stability and tuning, friction & resonance.
• Hands-on embedded C/C++ capability for motor-control hardware, including PWM/ADC timing and real-time execution.
• Experimental approach using motion data, analysis tools, and oscilloscopes to test hypotheses and quantify margins.
• Independent engineering judgment with collaborative decision-making and clear ownership across disciplines.
• Clear communication and durable ownership; surface risks early and deliver reusable tools.

Responsibilities

• Partner with mechanical, electrical, and test engineers to evaluate motor & drive options and implement optimal control approaches.
• Develop, integrate, and tune BLDC/PMSM and stepper control, selecting drives, controller ICs, or custom firmware.
• Evaluate control strategies and quantify performance, cost, and reliability tradeoffs; establish operating limits and margins.
• Work with cross-functional teams on instrumented experiments and automated tests; contribute controls measurements and analysis.
• Diagnose issues across controls, electronics, firmware, and mechanics; drive corrective changes.
• Create calibration tools, validated configurations, telemetry, fault handling, and documentation to ease commissioning and support.
