Job summary

hum.ai in San Francisco or remote is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to own the software and infrastructure that trains and serves our models. You’ll enable the data-to-training pipeline, large-scale experiments, and efficient inference paths for the agent that answers customer questions.

You will work with engineers and scientists to scale multimodal training, optimize benchmarks, and control costs while delivering reliable, production-grade Python code.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of relevant industry experience, including hands-on machine learning engineering.
• Proficiency building distributed, multi-node training pipelines in PyTorch and Lightning.
• Experience with AWS or another cloud platform, particularly the tooling for training and serving medium-to-large models.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals: you write production-quality Python and care about reliability, observability, and cost.
• Fluent with modern agentic coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) and current on how to use them well.

Responsibilities

• Own the ML platform: build and run the systems for experiment tracking, distributed training at scale, and serving inference, ensuring speed, reliability, and reproducibility.
• Collaborate on interfaces: define and maintain boundaries between data-train, data-inference, and inference-agent.
• Enable multimodal training: build data/model plumbing for training on many sensors, observation types, and text.
• Scale experiments: help scientists prove ideas in fast, cheap experiments and scale winners to petabyte-scale runs.
• Improve evaluation: implement and improve benchmarks and evaluation frameworks, internal and user-facing.
• Monitor cost & wall-clock time: measure and optimize training, inference, and experiments.
