Job summary

At Atlassian, a Senior Machine Learning Engineer will lead the development and productionization of advanced ML systems to improve discovery, understanding, and action on knowledge across the platform.

You will partner with product managers, software engineers, and data scientists to translate challenges into scalable AI solutions, mentor teammates, and drive architectural decisions for intelligent search, recommendations, and NLP capabilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's in CS, ML, AI, DS or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 5 years of professional ML or data science experience in production.
• Strong Python and production languages such as Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript.
• Strong knowledge of SQL and experience with large-scale data processing technologies such as Spark.
• Experience deploying and scaling machine learning models using large and complex datasets.
• Familiarity with cloud environments such as AWS or Databricks.
• Experience designing evaluation strategies and using metrics, experimentation, and error analysis to guide model and product improvements.
• Experience collaborating across product, engineering, analytics, and data science teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; agile mindset.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and productionization of state-of-the-art ML algorithms and models.
• Own ML projects from concept to production deployment, measurement, and improvement.
• Develop scalable data and modeling approaches using large datasets.
• Design robust architectures meeting quality, latency, scale, reliability, privacy, and cost requirements.
• Build ML solutions across information retrieval, search ranking, personalization, NLP, DL, and LLMs.
• Design and execute rigorous experiments, offline evaluations, online tests, and error analyses.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, data science, analytics, and platform teams to integrate AI capabilities.
• Translate research into reliable, maintainable production systems.
• Identify opportunities to improve model performance and customer outcomes.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to technical strategy.
