SolomonEdwards is seeking a Senior Metallurgist for onsite work in Reading, PA. You will provide technical metallurgical support across premium melting operations (VIM, ESR, VAR) and interact with customers to meet specifications.

Responsibilities include reviewing materials, applying statistics, driving yield, and mentoring staff. A relocation package is offered and travel modest. Requires 4+ years in metallurgy and strong problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant metallurgical or manufacturing experience.
  • Strong knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods, and industrial practices.
  • Experience leading technical programs or projects and delivering results on schedule.

Job description

*Onsite in Reading, PA (Relocation Package Offered)

The Senior Metallurgist –provides technical expertise and support to internal and external customers while contributing to organizational and operational goals. This role provides metallurgical and technical support across premium melting operations, including Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM), Electroslag Remelting (ESR), and Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR)

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and disposition referred, non-conforming, and off-standard materials in accordance with applicable specifications, procedures, and customer requirements.
  • Apply statistical methods and analytical techniques to investigate process issues, solve problems, and design experiments.
  • Ensure melt quality through timely review of melt records, verification of procedural compliance, and adherence to established customer requirements and frozen practices.
  • Support the development and implementation of new procedures and process improvements using process management and standardized work principles.
  • Identify and establish meaningful critical process variables, process tests, and controls to reduce process variation and improve consistency.
  • Drive improvements in melt-shop yield, productivity, efficiency, and operating costs.
  • Evaluate and qualify new raw material and refractory sources to ensure they meet technical and quality requirements.
  • Review specifications and provide metallurgical support for the introduction of new products and processes.
  • Participate in the investigation and resolution of customer technical issues related to melting operations.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Technical Services, Research & Development, Purchasing, Quality, and other cross-functional teams to resolve issues and drive continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical support during customer audits and assist with preparation and follow-up activities.
  • Provide training and technical education to customers and internal personnel as needed.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other employees within the functional area.
  • Work closely with production operators and shop-floor personnel to identify and implement improvements in safety, quality, productivity, and cost.
  • Lead or participate in technical projects and improvement initiatives, ensuring objectives are achieved within established timelines.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant metallurgical or manufacturing experience.
  • Strong knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods, and industrial practices.
  • Working knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment, with an awareness of emerging technologies and industry advancements.
  • Understanding and practical application of statistical methods, Six Sigma, Business Process Improvement (BPI), and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience initiating and managing technical programs or projects, delivering results on schedule, and identifying and mitigating potential risks.
  • Ability to independently provide technical support, guidance, and recommendations to peers, customers, and management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and contribute effectively to cross-functional project teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong organizational and prioritization abilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound technical decisions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively collaborating within a team environment.
  • Ability to work safely in manufacturing and mill environments and access production areas as required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel on a limited basis.
  • Ability to develop and deliver technical training and educational programs for customers and internal personnel.
  • Ability to mentor and support colleagues within the metallurgical and technical functions.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, particularly when working directly with production operators and manufacturing personnel to drive improvements in safety, quality, productivity, and cost.
