Job summary

San Mateo County Health seeks an experienced Medical Records Coder II/III to join Correctional Health and support CalAIM billable services, including clinic visits and ancillary services. You will ensure accurate reimbursement while supporting continuity of care for justice-involved individuals.

Initial onsite training will occur in the Health Information Management Department in San Mateo, with potential remote options based on needs.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and E/M coding.
• Experience with coding audits, education of providers, and identifying billing issues.
• Proficiency using Epic or similar EHR and coding/editing systems.
• Knowledge of Medi-Cal/CalAIM and related regulations is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Independently review clinical documentation and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, E/M, and modifiers for outpatient professional‑fee services.
• Review queues, denials, and unresolved accounts to identify and resolve issues.
• Collaborate with providers and staff to clarify documentation and promote accurate coding.
• Conduct coding audits, document findings, and recommend corrective actions.
• Monitor coding quality, productivity, and turnaround times; stay current with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and Medi-Cal requirements.
• Work with multiple departments to improve coding procedures and documentation practices.
