Job summary

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 3 years of work experience, or an associate's with 1 year, or coding diploma/certification with 1 year of experience.
• Preferred: Associate's degree in HIM or AHIMA/AAPC coding program.
• Licensure: RHIT, RHIA, and CSC credentials from AHIMA/CCHIIM.
• Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS, MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and APC coding principles.
• Understanding of third-party reimbursement regulations and charging practices.

Responsibilities

• Navigate patient health records and systems to accurately determine diagnosis and procedure codes, MS-DRGs, and APCs with appropriate modifiers.
• Validate charges by comparing with documentation as needed.
• Communicate effectively with clinical staff, physicians, and leadership on documentation issues.
• Identify and escalate concerns to leadership to resolve issues in inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory coding.
• Track missing documentation and queries to ensure timely coding.
• Maintain coding quality and productivity per department standards.
• Protect patient information and adhere to confidentiality policies.
• Stay updated on changes in coding and reimbursement guidelines and regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
