Job summary

1X is building NEO, a home humanoid robot designed to move, learn, and operate safely around people. We’re hiring a Body & Joints engineer who will own parts of the body architecture and drive the hardware from concept through prototyping, validation, and production.

You’ll work hands-on with hardware, iterating designs based on testing and real-world robot performance. This role directly affects mobility, strength, safety, and manufacturability of a mass‑produced humanoid.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience developing complex mechanical or electromechanical products.
• Experience designing mechanisms, structural components, precision assemblies, or robotic systems.
• Advanced proficiency with 3D CAD and owning complex mechanical assemblies from concept to released drawings.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals including statics, dynamics, materials, fatigue, friction, fasteners, bearings, and tolerance analysis.
• Experience with GD&T, tolerance stack analysis, drawing release, and production documentation.
• Experience designing components for machining, casting, molding, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, or other production processes.
• Experience building and testing prototypes and using test results to drive design decisions.
• Experience integrating mechanical systems with motors, sensors, electronics, wiring, and other electromechanical components.
• Experience collaborating with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, electrical, controls, and systems engineering organizations.

Responsibilities

• Build the mechanical systems that make humanoid robots move.
• Own critical parts of NEO’s body and joint architecture from concept through design, prototyping, validation, and production.
• Develop compact, lightweight, robust, and manufacturable hardware for everyday human environments.
• Work hands-on with hardware and iterate designs based on testing and real-world performance.
• Impact mobility, strength, reliability, safety, weight, manufacturability, and overall capability of NEO.
