Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Assembly Team to design, develop, and manage fabrication of tooling for SPARC tokamak assembly. You will own tooling concepts, guide system teams, and write work-instruction packets, partnering with physicists and engineers at MIT PSFC and within CFS.

This role requires a BS in a relevant field, 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience, and 4+ years leading assembly processes.

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience with project ownership.
  • 4+ years overseeing construction, manufacturing, or assembly/integration.
  • 4+ years of experience with CAD software.

Responsibilities

  • Own the tooling design, lifting, manipulation, and support frames for SPARC components.
  • Formulate assembly strategies and coordinate with system teams.
  • Analyze tool structures and kinematics for safe, effective operation.
  • Ensure tool and personnel access during assembly steps as outlined by system owners.
  • Assist alignment planning for precision placement of magnets and vessels.
  • Oversee fabrication of tools at outside vendor shops and guide troubleshooting.
  • Specify and procure all hardware required for tools.
  • Create assembly work instruction packets and support on-site activation of tools.
  • Collaborate with tooling engineers, designers, and assembly coordinators during on-site work.
  • Seek feedback to meet project requirements in a high-load, vacuum, and complex manipulation environment.
