Job summary

Intuitive Surgical, a global leader in robotic-assisted surgery, seeks a Mechanical Engineer III focused on advanced energy catheters and instruments. You will join a small, high-energy team to design, prototype, and verify new concepts for surgical robotics, supporting both research and commercialization efforts.

The role requires 5+ years of mechanical design experience, CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred), and hands-on prototyping.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience with a BS; 3 years with a MS in a mechanical/biomedical field.
• Experience working in cross-functional R&D teams.
• Familiarity with FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, ISO 14971.
• Experience with rapid prototyping methods for instruments and fixtures, including 3D printing and machining.
• Experience with flexible catheter design and electromechanical devices.
• Proficiency in CAD-based mechanical design (SolidWorks preferred).
• Experience working with suppliers and managing components.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; effective written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Work in a small cross-functional project team to design, develop and verify advanced energy catheters and instruments.
• Develop, implement, test and document new solutions following corporate standards.
• Perform hands-on assembly and testing to support proof of concept, development, and validation activities.
• Support investigation and root-cause analysis of defects or failures.
• Create and maintain design/manufacturing documentation and change controls.
• Collaborate with clinical engineering to assess concepts and perform tradeoff analyses.
• Observe clinical cases and inform designs based on feedback from clinicians.
• Set individual goals aligned to project goals and company strategy.
