Job summary

SmithGroup's San Diego office is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead HVAC system design, energy modeling and sustainable design initiatives. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, promote energy efficiency, and drive performance improvements across projects.

You will mentor staff, participate in client meetings, and contribute to quality control and project goals while leveraging Revit and Office tools to deliver robust solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a mechanical engineer designing HVAC, sustainable design and automatic control systems, including energy modeling.
  • LEED AP preferred. PE registration required.
  • Ability to lead and mentor others in area of expertise.
  • Demonstrate experience in improving project energy performance.
  • Knowledge of design and construction processes and communication across disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication with internal and external clients.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical engineering effort through all project stages and assist in marketing and discipline management.
  • Advance energy efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in projects.
  • Develop project goals, budgets, schedules; track performance and ensure quality control.
  • Meet with clients, teams, code officials and contractors to address HVAC issues and foster relationships.
  • Present engineering solutions to clients and review committees.
  • Conduct research and devise solutions for complex problems in mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with the IMPACT Team on tools to evaluate system efficiency, resiliency and decarbonization.
  • Lead analysis, design and documentation of HVAC systems and controls.
  • Mentor junior staff and participate in performance coaching and interviews.

The San Diego office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team.

Working with us, you will:

  • Serve as the engineering leader through all stages of a project of any size and play a larger role in the marketing of the studio and management of the discipline.
  • Actively promote and advocate for increased energy efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in our projects.
  • Assist in establishing project goals, budgets and schedules, track project performance, and follow/enforce quality control procedures.
  • Meet with clients, project teams, code officials, contractors and others to address mechanical discipline issues and to develop effective working relationships.
  • Present engineering design solutions to client representatives and/or design review committees.
  • Serve as a mechanical systems specialist, conduct research in problem areas of considerable scope/complexity and devise solutions.
  • Contribute to SmithGroup sustainable design initiatives by using a variety of software to perform energy, heating and cooling load and computational fluid dynamic calculations.
  • Collaborate with our SmithGroup IMPACT Team on the best in class analytical tools to evaluate system efficiencies, resiliency, and decarbonization performance.
  • Lead and perform analysis, design and documentation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and controls.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate level staff and participate in performance coaching.
  • Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.

An ideal candidate has:

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience working as a mechanical engineer designing HVAC, sustainable design and automatic control systems, including experience performing energy modeling.
  • LEED AP preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) registration required.
  • The ability to lead and mentor others in area of expertise.
  • Demonstrate experience in improving project energy performance.
  • Working knowledge of the design and construction process and the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealing with internal and external clients.
