Job summary

SmithGroup Los Angeles is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead HVAC systems design, energy modeling, and project delivery. You will mentor staff, engage with clients, and help advance sustainable design initiatives across healthcare, science, and education projects.

The role requires a PE license, a strong background in energy performance improvement, and ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams in a hybrid office environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience designing HVAC systems and energy modeling.
  • PE registration is required; LEED AP is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical engineering efforts through all project stages and contribute to marketing and discipline management.
  • Promote energy efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in projects.
  • Establish project goals, budgets, and schedules; track performance and ensure quality control.
  • Meet with clients and project teams to address mechanical issues and foster relationships.
  • Present engineering solutions to clients and review boards; mentor junior staff.
  • Support recruitment and participate in performance coaching.

The Los Angelesoffice of SmithGroupis looking for aSenior Mechanical Engineerto join our team.

Working with us, you will:
  • Serve as the engineering leader through all stages of a project of any size and play a larger role in the marketing of the studio and management of the discipline.
  • Actively promote and advocateforincreased energy efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in ourprojects.
  • Assistinestablishingproject goals, budgets and schedules,trackproject performance, andfollow/enforce quality control procedures.
  • Meetwithclients, project teams, code officials,contractorsand others to address mechanical discipline issues and to develop effective working relationships.
  • Present engineering design solutions to client representatives and/or design review committees.
  • Serve as a mechanical systems specialist, conduct research in problem areas of considerable scope/complexityand devise solutions.
  • Contribute to SmithGroup sustainable design initiatives by using a variety of software to perform energy, heating and cooling load and computational fluid dynamic calculations.
  • Collaboratewith our SmithGroup IMPACT Team on thebestinclassanalytical tools to evaluate systemefficiencies, resiliency, and decarbonization performance.
  • Lead and perform analysis,designand documentation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and controls.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate level staff andparticipatein performance coaching.
  • Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.
An ideal candidate has:
  • Abachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience working as a mechanical engineer designing HVAC,sustainabledesignand automatic controlsystems, including experience performing energy modeling.
  • LEED AP preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) registrationrequired.
  • The ability to lead and mentor others inareaof expertise.
  • Demonstrate experience in improving project energy performance.
  • Working knowledge of the design and construction process and the ability to understand and communicate with professionals of other disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in dealing with internal and external clients.

While we may ultimately pay more or less than a posted salary range, at the time of posting the anticipated salary range for this position is $135,000 to $159,000 annually and you are eligible for a performance-based bonus each year.
