Our New York-based team is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support a diverse portfolio of projects across the New York metro area and the broader Northeast region.

Arup is recognized globally for delivering innovative, high-performance, and sustainable solutions across a wide range of sectors, including commercial, residential, healthcare, science and technology, infrastructure, and mission-critical facilities.

In this role, you will contribute to the design and delivery of mechanical systems across a variety of building types and scales. You will address challenges related to energy efficiency, decarbonization, occupant comfort, resiliency, and urban constraints, while navigating local codes, utility requirements, and climate-responsive design considerations. Leveraging Arup's global network, tools, and technical expertise, you will help deliver integrated and sustainable solutions that meet client goals and create lasting impact.

This role is based in New York City, with flexibility to support projects throughout the Northeast.

The Opportunity
  • Lead mechanical engineering design across a variety of projects, including HVAC systems, hydronic plant design, airside distribution, ventilation strategies, and building performance optimization.
  • Contribute to projects spanning multiple sectors such as commercial offices, residential developments, healthcare facilities, laboratories, infrastructure, and mission-critical environments.
  • Deliver practical and innovative designs that respond to site constraints, sustainability targets, budget considerations, and constructability requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams-including electrical, plumbing, structural, fire/life safety, and project management-to deliver integrated and high-quality solutions.
  • Assist, supervise, and mentor junior engineers; provide timely feedback, recognition, and technical guidance to support a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, supporting successful project delivery, repeat business, and long-term partnerships.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, technical reports, and basis-of-design documentation in alignment with applicable codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Present technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences through meetings, workshops, and client presentations.
  • Stay current with evolving technologies, sustainability strategies, and industry trends across the built environment.
  • Support project delivery through ownership of quality, risk awareness, and commercial performance.
The Skills

  • Minimum 6 years of professional experience designing HVAC and building mechanical systems across a range of project types (e.g., commercial, residential, healthcare, science & technology, or infrastructure).
  • Experience working within New York City and Northeast regulatory environments strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Revit MEP; experience with load calculations, energy modeling, and mechanical system analysis is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
  • Confident presenter with sound commercial awareness.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred.
