Job summary

Groundedrvs is seeking a mechanical design engineer in Detroit to lead the design of a modular vehicle platform. You will move from concept to production, collaborating closely with technicians and a small team to scale integration across modules.

You will design for manufacturability, balance mechanical, plumbing, and electrical concerns, and help build a library of reusable modules for diverse applications.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of mechanical design experience, taking products from concept through production.
• Strong CAD skills with NX preferred; also proficient in SolidWorks and CATIA.
• Experience designing for manufacturability: welded structures, sheet metal, tubing, fastening systems.
• Comfortable on a shop floor, working with technicians and iterating in real time.
• Systems-level thinker who can hold the whole vehicle in mind and plan modularity.
• Background in automotive, commercial vehicles, EV, or industrial equipment.
• Experience at a smaller company or startup is a strong plus due to ambiguity and fast pace.

Responsibilities

• Own mechanical design for customer vehicles and the modular platform from whiteboard to CAD to shop floor.
• Design complex assemblies in Siemens NX with hundreds to thousands of components per vehicle.
• Work daily with technicians to create work instructions and iterate on designs on the floor.
• Think across mechanical, plumbing, and electrical integration while understanding overall system.
• Iterate quickly, coordinating fabrication before design is fully complete to maintain pace.
• Contribute to building a module library with standardized attachment points, BOMs, and assembly instructions.
• Collaborate with software engineers to automate design and manufacturing workflows.
