General Job Summary

The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer works autonomously in determining and implementing mechanical designs that meet cost and schedule objectives and customer requirements.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Designs shelters and mechanical modifications such as rack installations, ECU installations, entry panel installations, and miscellaneous ancillary items.
  2. Attends job kick-off meetings and participates in design reviews with customers.
  3. Reviews customer requirements including customer specifications, Statements of Work, and interface drawings to ensure compliance with contract.
  4. Prepares and updates task lists.
  5. Tracks schedules and budgets on assigned programs.
  6. Issues long lead material.
  7. Provides technical input to CAD design team on various tasks.
  8. Reviews and approves drawings.
  9. Interfaces with other departments to resolve questions and technical issues.
  10. Creates technical proposals, technical materials, and procurement specifications.
  11. Supports the Sales department in proposal development and engineering estimates.
  12. Reviews vendor/shop drawings, quotes, and proposals.
  13. Resolves vendor issues and dispositions defective material. Creates Cost Schedule Impact Logs (CSILs) for added scope.
  14. Submits Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs).
  15. Interfaces with customers and contracts to resolve customer-related issues.
  16. Contributes to product improvement, new products, and product standardization.
  17. Mentors Associate Mechanical Design Engineers and Mechanical Design Engineers.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Required Experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information as required by government standards.
  • Ability to interact effectively with peers and supervisors.
  • Ability to interact appropriately with the public when necessary.
  • Ability to adhere to workplace rules.

Education And Experience

  • BSME/BSMET degree in a technical field.
  • 6+ years of professional engineering experience.
  • Experience with Auto-Cad; 3-D Modeling Software, etc.
  • Defense/DoD-engineering background preferable.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Office environment.
  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions (keyboarding, 10-key, phones).
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
