Job summary

Ursa Major is hiring a Senior Materials Engineer (TPS) to advance next-generation thermal protection systems for solid rocket motors. You will analyze materials, run experiments, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure safe, high-performance propulsion components.

The role requires ~5 years in materials engineering, expertise in high-temperature environments, and the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance.

Qualifications

• BS in materials engineering; ~5 years experience; preferred master's degree.
• Knowledge of material properties, heat treatment, metallurgy or related discipline.
• Comfortable in a laboratory setting and operating lab equipment.
• Experience with elastomeric compounds, ceramic, ablative composite, and graphite materials.
• Comfortable with hazardous materials and materials handling.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

• Support material sourcing and selection for the thermal protection system in SRM systems.
• Develop and analyze thermal models for TPS design evaluations using thermodynamics and heat transfer principles.
• Conduct laboratory scale experiments to validate material selection and design.
• Define bonding and mechanical properties for integration of materials into SRM systems.
• Support manufacturing validation and process improvement in design development.
• Drive current fabrication for TPS and adapt technology for next-generation projects.
• Collaborate with team members to establish system requirements and achieve integration goals.
• Document processes and write work instructions for future development.
