Job summary

The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. is seeking an Assistant Vice President of Marine Underwriting to lead underwriting quality, strategy, and governance for the Marine Business Unit. This role is based in Dallas or Houston, TX, and is hybrid, reporting to the President of Marine.

You will partner with Marine leadership to drive performance, develop pricing tools, and ensure competitive product offerings while mentoring a high-performing team across a matrixed organization.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of inland marine underwriting experience.
• 3+ years of leadership experience in a highly matrixed organization.
• Strong marine product and underwriting skills with deep industry insight.
• Exceptional communication skills and decisive decision-making.
• Strategic and insightful thinking with good judgment.
• Willingness and ability to travel as needed.

Responsibilities

• Develop a Marine strategy aligned with the overall Business Insurance plan.
• Manage underwriting performance through guidelines, referrals, and audits.
• Collaborate with Marine leaders to optimize performance across classes.
• Develop risk selection and pricing tools to improve profitability.
• Provide oversight of marine coverages and product offerings.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing home office team.
• Provide training on products and tools to field units.
• Prepare product overviews for leadership and industry updates.
• Collaborate with Claims, Finance, Reinsurance, Compliance, Legal, and Actuary teams to ensure alignment.
