Job summary

Firestorm Labs in San Diego is seeking a Principal Manufacturing Design Engineer to join the engineering team as an IC, guiding design for manufacturability from program inception through production. You will work on structures, tooling, ground support, and process designs, ensuring designs are buildable and scalable across sites.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering required; related discipline considered.
• 10+ years of aerospace/defense engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience with composites and metallics manufacturing and tooling.
• Experience designing production tooling including layup tools and fixtures.
• Strong GD&T and ASME Y14.5 knowledge, model-based definition understanding.
• Experience with PLM systems at design lead level.

Responsibilities

• Join aircraft design team from inception and contribute on structures, parts, assemblies.
• Drive DFM/DFA from day one and trade studies for manufacturability and cost.
• Create and release models/drawings in NX and SolidWorks with GD&T.
• Manage design releases, revisions, and engineering changes in PLM.
• Define manufacturing approaches across composites, metals, assembly, bonding, and inspection.
• Design ground support equipment and shipping/handling solutions.
• Support tooling procurement and commissioning with manufacturing team.
• Transition to production with documentation and early builds support.
• Collaborate across design, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain to resolve producibility issues.
